The Indian Forest Services Examination is a UPSC examination for recruitment of the Indian Forest officers. This service has been developed during 1966 for protecting the natural flora and fauna of our country. The forest officers help in the conservation, regeneration and the protection of the forest resources. While the deserving candidates are selected through an all India level examination they work in the various states of India and their services are put under the state cadre. Therefore an IFS officer is privileged enough to work under a state cadre while enjoying the perks and the benefits of a Central government employee. A successful UPSC Result in the IFS allows the candidates to join as assistant conservator, chief conservator, district conservator, principal conservator and as the IG of forests. The most senior level to where an IFS officer may reach is as Environment Secretary with the Union Government. There is a three tier examination which the candidates need to combat successfully in order to enter the Indian Forest Services.
Eligibility for the IFS The eligibility for the Indian Forest Services Examination includes Bachelors in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Math, Geology, Botany, Zoology, Statistics and Physics. Also candidates with bachelors in Forestry/Agriculture/Engineering from any of the recognized university are also eligible to sit for the IFS examinations. Candidates who are sitting for their degree exams can also give the Forest Service exams. This UPSC examination is conducted every year and a successful UPSC Result in the Indian Forest Service is very much coveted by the candidates who want to help maintain the ecological balance through the maintenance of the forests.
About the examination The Indian Forest Services Examination consists of a written paper followed by an interview. In the written paper there is a General English paper, a General Knowledge paper and questions on two optional papers. The candidates who can qualify for the written papers are then called for an interview or Personality test which is of 300 marks. The pattern of the examination for the IFS is quite similar to that of the other UPSC exams.
