Deputations & Study Leave

DEPUTATION

Officers of the civil services, can if they give their consent, are posted to other organizations. This would include deputations to public sector undertakings; public corporations; government departments or ministries; or even international bodies (like the UNDP or FAO). However, if a government post is reserved for one particular service, no one from outside that service can occupy
it under the rules. 

STUDY LEAVE

All officers of the All India Services are entitled to two years' study leave during the tenure of their service. During this period they are paid their full salary and allowances, while their seniority of service is maintained. 

This enables officers to, on their own initiative, specialize in any area of interest, gain field experience or study at a university in India or abroad. Besides this, the government also sponsors officers for specialized training courses within and outside the country, to enable them to keep up with developments in their field. 

During this period, the government ensures that sponsored officers are provided return airfare; full tuition and other fees in addition to their total salary and other benefits at their place of work. The duration of sponsored training usually does not exceed one year.
