S.Santhi fails gender test(14, Dec
2006)
S. Santhi, who won the silver medal in the women's 800metres in
the Asian Games, failed a gender test at Doha. Following this,
the Olympic Council of Asia has decided to withdraw the medal
from the Indian athlete. The Tamilnadu athlete won the 1500mgold
and the 800 silver in the South Asian Games in Colombo in August
this year. Indian athletics has been put in an embarrassing
position after this episode.

Top Seeds Paes and Mahesh go for Gold at Doha Games(14,
Dec 2006)
Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the Asiad men's doubles
gold playing against the the Thai doubles pair of Sanchai
Ratiwatana and Soncha Ratiwatana. The 2 hour 43 minute marathon
game was clinched by the Indians to the din and roar of cheering
Indians at the Khalifa Tennis Complex, Doha. A great comeback
for probably the best loved pair in Indian Tennis.
Indian Cricket Team Arrives In South Africa(15,
Nov 2006)
The Indian team arrived in Johannesburg for a seven-week tour
that includes five ODIs and three Test matches against South
African team.
- Indian Team: Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rahul
Dravid, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Mohammad Kaif, Suresh Raina,
Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan, Sreesanth and

Doha Asian Games: India's Weightlifters Can�t Play

India's weightlifters will miss Asian Games in Doha (December
1-15, 2006) followed by their officials can't afford to pay a
$50,000 fine for doping offences made by the two male Indian
weightlifters, Edwin Raju and Tejinder Singh during the
Commonwealth Games in Australia earlier 2006.
- But the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF)
announced it will waive the ban, allowing India's
participation in the Asian Games, if pays up the money and
not doing so, India�s weightlifters will not participate in
the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
- Two women, Prameelavalli Bodari and Shailaja Pujari,
failed pre-Games tests and were banned by India from making
the trip to Australia.
Lottery To Promote Sports In Kerala(17,
Nov 2006)
The government of Kerala is planning a sports lottery -
Kalimidukkinori Kaineetam, or helping hand - to promote sports
in the state.
- The tickets priced at Rs.100 each launched in
Thiruvananthapuram. The draw for the first prize of Rs.2.00
crore will be on 26 January 2007. The government has
approached Brazilian football legend Pele and track and
field great Carl Lewis among others to participate in the
event.
- National sports persons, international sport persons -
Pele and Carl Lewis are expected to come in solidarity with
sports campaigns in this corner of the world, said Kerala
Finance Minister Thomas Issac.
Athlete Shobha Makes Her Place In Team For Doha Games(21,
Nov 2006)
J.J. Shobha compiled 5861 points in the heptathlon trials for
the Asian and ensured her place in the team and also met the
Athletic Federation of India's expectations.
- Shobha and Soma Biswas, the latter having won the two
National titles that mattered, the Open and the Inter-State
(5799), would be the candidates in heptathlon with
22-year-old Susmita.
- Susmita was ahead of Shobha in the last two National
competitions.
